One-on-One (W)riting Midwifery, Instruction, Editing, & Mentorship:
Creative (w)riting midwife, Sarah Elizabeth Schantz, is available to work with writers and students privately. She has helped writers draft and/or revise novels, chapbooks, poetry collections, short stories, essays, speeches, theatre pieces, and articles. She is also experienced in helping students with college applications, essays (both personal and academic), as well as thesis and dissertation work. She has experience working with writers, artists, and actors as well as students of all ages. She has instructed and facilitated workshops for children, teens, and adults. Sarah has mentored students in their twenties and in their eighties.
She is currently working with adults only but Toni Oswald is available through Youth (W)rites!, an offshoot program for those writers aged 8-19 (see the page titled Youth (W)rites! for more information).
Along with (W)rites of Passage, Sarah is faculty at Lighthouse Writers Workshop (she was the 2022 recipient of The Beacon Award for Excellence in Teaching and is now one of the mentors for The Book Project, but teaches several classes yearlong for the non-profit); through Lighthouse, and both the Arvada and Boulder Public Libraries, Sarah is one of the rotating faculty to teach Hard Times, a free writing workshop/program for anyone experiencing "hard times" (she teaches the first and third Wednesdays of each month for Arvada via Zoom and the second Tuesday of the month at the main branch of the Boulder Public Library in-person); she adjuncts at Naropa University where she has taught such workshops as The Glimmer, The Ghost (Summer Writing Program, 2020), Gothic Literature, Women's Lit, Asking the Oracle, Rooting in the Archives, and Memoir/Anti-Memoir; and she used to teach Creative Writing, Literature & Composition at Front Range Community College where she was named Master Teacher of all Campuses in 2018.
Past clients include: Kiri Westby's Fortune Favors the Brave: An Extraordinary Memoir, 2020 from Post Hill Press (an imprint at Simon & Schuster); Claire Sicherman's Imprint: A Memoir of Trauma in the Third Generation, Caitlin Press in 2017; Toni Oswald's poetry book Sirens, Gesture Press, 2021; Vicki Ash Hunter's Running and Returning: Seeking Balance in an Imperfect World, CG Sports Publishing, 2022; and Kiki Dorsey's novel, As Joan Approaches Infinity, Gesture Press, 2023. Her rates vary depending on the project and her availability fills up fast (generally speaking she charges $7.00-$10.00 a double-spaced page or $75.00 an hour for prose). She has flat rates for poems, essays, and short stories.
